Presentation Instructions: Parking Lot Drills

Presentation: Maximum 5 Minutes

There are three steps to teaching a skill:

  1. W — Why do we learn this skill? Explain the reasons to learn the skill, i.e. avoid a left-turning vehicle.
  2. E — Explain the technique including the physics involved, i.e. show how much traction a tire has even at a steep lean angle.
  3. D — Demonstrate with a walk through and a ride through. Your job is to learn to do the demonstration so others can see what you area doing. Practice before you do this — it will make it look easier, and there are no crashes in this course.

One student will be evaluating you as you demonstrate. They will be evaluated on their ability is to analyze, suggest and encourage.

  • Analyze: determine what you are doing right and what specific thing you need to work on.
  • Suggest: based on their knowledge of you as a student suggest ways you can change to accomplish the drill better.
  • Encourage: every student requires specific feedback to create change and the best is enthusiastic encouragement. They will be expected to catch you doing something right and encourage that but make sure to indicate the things that you can change to grow.

You have been given a diagram of the various parking lot drills. We will split into small groups and each group will be responsible for setting up at least one of the drills. Although there are eight drills on the diagram we will concentrate on the four drills that present the highest risk for your students.

The four Handling Skill drills will be demonstrated by the coach and teaching assistants. You will then have a chance to teach at least one of the four drills. You will have 5 minutes in which you will be expected to describe Why we do the drill, Explain how to do it and demonstrate it for your students.

The Hazard Avoidance drills (Quick Stop, Rock Dodge, Avoidance Weave and Instant Turn) that require more explanation and demonstration will be set up as shown on the diagrams. Each candidate will have a chance to teach each drill at least once. You will practice teach on Day 2 with critique and you will teach and be graded on Day 3. You will have 5 minutes in which you will be expected to describe Why we do the drill, Explain how to do it and Demonstrate it for your students.
