Advance preparation
We strongly encourage you to prepare the presentation prior to arriving at the seminar, and to have the Lesson Plan Form completed and ready to review during the first session as the techniques of good teaching are presented. A significant portion of the your evaluation will be based on presentation preparation and delivery so advance preparation is important.
Presentation Set-up: Maximum 2 minutes
Presentation Delivery: Maximum 8 minutes
- You will have time to set up and then the clock will start.
- You will get a warning when 3 minutes remain and when 1 minute remains, and your time will end when 8 minutes has elapsed. You should make your presentation fit the time by judicious deletion of detail.
- By the time you present we will have reviewed some concepts and techniques of teaching which you should incorporate in your presentation.
- Learning styles
- Elements of communication
- Presentation options
Critique: Maximum 5 minutes
We will be critiquing the presentation to help the presenter improve. We are not questioning issues of content unless the presenter makes significant content errors.
- Each presenter will be asked to self-critique first.
- Other candidates will then have a chance to critique presentation technique. Candidates also will be graded on critique technique.
- The seminar leader(s) will complete the critique of the presentation and correct any major content errors.
We will pass out enough forms for each person to critique every other presenter. Put the presenter’s name at the top and when the form is complete pass it to the presenter. Remember, each presenter has two presentations. Make sure you get both critiques on one page.
Remember, this is not about you and what you know; it is about teaching cyclists how to enjoy riding safely. You know more than you can possible present in 8 minutes, so use your time wisely.
Background
Each of the modules is taken from the Traffic Skills 101 course in your LCI manual; the Traffic Skills 101 student manual is also a good resource. You are normally asked to present as if you were presenting to a mixed group of relatively inexperienced cyclists. You may choose to define a different audience. You should plan to use the presentation tools that you will have available and with which you feel comfortable. The following items may be available. You should check to make sure what is available first.
- Flip chart/whiteboard with colored markers
- Bicycle and stand
- Overhead projector
- Computer and projector
